Influence Map

Oh, Hi there.

This is my neat pattern of sequential numbers, they've got images behind them to make the numbers look nicer. Also, the images help to illustrate my project's root influence.

Some would even call it an Influence Map.

1. Team Fortress 2 - Art Style.
2. The City of Lost Children - Props, Architecture
3. A Scanner Darkly (2006) - Art Style
4. 9 (2009) - Environmental Art
5. Fallout 3 - Environmental Art
6. Art Deco - General Art Style
7. Metropolis (1927) - Architecture, Atmosphere
8. The Ottoman - Architecture
9. The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920) - Environment
10. The Time Machine (1960) - Because it's the film based on the book
11. Sherlock Holmes (2009) - Golden, pattern Architecture
12. Hellboy (2004) - "Steampunk" Architecture, Environment, Props
13. Borderlands - Art Style

It's a mixture of old films, new films, and contemporary video games. I was tempted to put some books in, but passages are hard to cram into those little teeny weeny squares, and they're not as fun as visual aids.

You can probably tell by now the sort of colours and art style I might be aiming to use.- Strong use of browns, with a heavy influence on 'steampunk' culture. I don't want that, I can already imagine it will be boring and it will be Cliché.

I picked Team Fortress 2 as a main influence because of this. Besides other reasons for choosing it, it's use of strong bold colours is one reason it appeals to its audience. I aim to transfer that reasoning onto my work

On another note, I love detail. This project and the influences I have brought into it seems to encourage detail. So it should be fun to throw in a lot of it into my three final concept paintings that I can possibly fit in.

    Ryan!!!

This is not the experience of your work at this stage I wanted! :-( I could waste my time reacting to this no-show, but I'll save my energy. Yes, you've got a swanky blog and yes, I like the post-it note gag - you're obviously very attentive - but this creative snub is wearing pretty thin. How can I put this clearly so you'll understand? Oh yes - on this course called CGAA, to which you've successfully applied and are now following, there is blog culture. It is how this course does things (there are other courses, should you be interested in them). The 'blog thing' is written into the course constitution, which means it's in your handbook, which means it's a part of the course to which you applied and are now following. It does seem as if you're actually very committed to your blog, as you seem to be able to find the time to accessorise it - but, not sadly, to populate with work as is required. This seems pretty bizarre to me and you might want to have a word with yourself and come to a decision in regard to the kind of student experience you want to have during your time here - again, let me be quite clear with you; there are other courses, Ryan - but right now you are on THIS course. Make a decision. I expect to see some pretty impressive stuff on here pretty f**king quick. You should absolutely get your essay proposal on here - because you need the input. If there's anything you'd like to discuss, please come and find me before Monday's film.

    Meanwhile, for what it's worth...

Here is a list of links back to the CGAA Group Blog, where I have recently uploaded loads of information regarding the way I want students to tackle their written assignments. As you now prepare your unit 2 assignments on production design, pay close attention to the advice given. I will be looking for clear improvement in terms of use of language, academic ‘voice’, use of conventions, argument structure and correct methods of referencing.

  3. Hi Phil,
I have no idea why they never got published. :s the stuff I just published now was originally in my drafts, I didn't notice it wasn't up until now.

As for the essay I haven't written anything regarding the proposal, but I do have a few ideas on what to do. I'll put it up along with some potential sources for research tonight.

    My apologies.

Also thanks for the links, I'll read through these as soon I get the chance.

  4. okay - you're forgiven - a clerical error, as opposed to a 'creative snub' - good job too!
